Parents consider homeschooling for Fall as schools shut down for foreseeable future

By The Canadian Press

OKOTOKS, Alta. – Canadians parents are getting a taste of homeschooling with the arrival of COVID-19.

Although students are receiving online assignments from schools, the uncertainty of what will happen in the long term has many parents looking for more information about home-schooling.

Paul Byrne, the principal of the Centre for Learning at Home, which has 2,200 students in Alberta, says his phone started ringing off the hook when schools started to close.

He says there’s been a significant increase in inquiries for the next school year.

Carlo Ricci, an education professor at Nippissing University in North Bay, Ont., is also a volunteer liaison for the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents, a provincial home-schooling support and advocacy group.

He says more people are researching and asking about homeschooling.

Toronto-based family therapist and author Alyson Schafer says parents are concerned about another possible wave of COVID-19, and want to take schooling into their own hands.
