The city of Montreal’s population increased by 5.3 per cent in just year, according to an estimate by the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ) – and 5 per cent for the island of Montreal.
The post-pandemic resumption of international immigration is said to have boosted the numbers.
La Presse reports that with an increase of almost 100,000 residents, the metropolis grew faster than any other major city in the province, including its suburbs.
The data includes all people on the territory (including temporary workers, whose numbers have recently jumped), with the exception of tourists.
According to La Presse’s compilation, Quebec municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants saw their population increase by an average of 3.5 per cent.
Municipalities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000, saw their populations increase by only 0.7 per cent between 2022 and 2023.
According to ISQ experts, downtown Montreal (Ville-Marie borough) gained 14 per cent in population between 2022 and 2023: 117,823 lived there on July 1, 2023, compared to 103,017 a year earlier. Côte-des-Neiges-NDG and Montreal North would also have seen significant growth.
