FAE teachers’ agreement accepted, fifth union votes in favour

The final Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) teachers’ union has voted in favour of the agreement in principle with the Quebec government – and the federation says the deal has been accepted.

“The FAE confirms that the agreement in principle of December 28, 2023 has been accepted by FAE members,” they said in a statement late Friday afternoon.

They’ll hold a press conference on Monday to comment on it further, but add that “result will be officially confirmed by the delegations of the affiliated unions at the Conseil fédératif de négociation on February 7.”

The Syndicat de l’enseignement de la Haute-Yamaska was the last of the unions to vote – and they voted 50.58 per cent for it, they posted to Facebook on Friday.

That means that five unions have voted to accept.

The FAE needed five of nine, plus a majority of its 66,500 members to ratify the agreement in principle for it to be accepted.

It’s still unknown how many members actually voted for or against.

The Syndicat de l’enseignement de la Pointe-de-l’Île, l’Alliance des professeures et professeurs de Montréal, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de l’Outaouais and the Syndicat de l’enseignement de l’Ouest de Montréal also voted in favour.

The four other unions, l’enseignement de la région de Laval, Basses-Laurentides, l’enseignement des Seigneuries et de la région de Québec voted against.

Voting on the agreement in principle started on Jan. 17.
