“At the peak of the response, more than 100 firefighters were on site battling the blaze,” said Émilie Barbeau-Charlebois, spokesperson for the Montreal fire department.

As of 9 a.m. on Tuesday, approximately 50 firefighters were still there and as of 12:30 p.m., 40 firefighters and 14 units were at the scene.

“We’ll be using a defensive strategy for a few more hours today, to ensure that the blaze is completely extinguished,” wrote Barbeau-Charlebois in an email to CityNews.

She also confirmed that most of the building had collapsed.
