A fire that broke out in an abandoned residential building in Montreal late Monday evening, was still burning for most of the day Tuesday.
Just before 9 p.m., firefighters were called to the blaze near Ontario and Saint-Laurent Blvd., in the Ville-Marie borough.
According to initial information, the fire began in the basement of a four-story building — and fourth alarm was launched.

“At the peak of the response, more than 100 firefighters were on site battling the blaze,” said Émilie Barbeau-Charlebois, spokesperson for the Montreal fire department.
As of 9 a.m. on Tuesday, approximately 50 firefighters were still there and as of 12:30 p.m., 40 firefighters and 14 units were at the scene.
“We’ll be using a defensive strategy for a few more hours today, to ensure that the blaze is completely extinguished,” wrote Barbeau-Charlebois in an email to CityNews.
She also confirmed that most of the building had collapsed.

No evacuation had to be made and no injuries were reported.
The fire was officially extinguished by 2:24 p.m. on Tuesday.
