Montreal invests $3.5M to boost safety, support in Quartier des spectacles

By News Staff

The City of Montreal and the Quebec government are investing more than $3.5 million to support cohabitation efforts in the city’s Quartier des spectacles.

The funding, announced Monday, comes at the start of the busy tourism season and will be used to enhance social intervention services in the downtown area.

Officials say the initiative aims to ensure a safe, healthy and inclusive environment for all who use the space, including workers, visitors and members of the unhoused community.

Four brigades of psychosocial counsellors will patrol the area around the clock.

The new teams will complement services already provided by the city’s mobile mediation and social intervention unit (EMMIS), as well as Montreal police and community partners.

The city says the measure will improve support for vulnerable individuals and allow for better coordination of frontline efforts.
