Quebec Environment Ministry fines Northvolt for alleged polluted wastewater

By The Canadian Press

Quebec’s Environment Ministry has fined Northvolt for allegedly discharging wastewater containing high concentrations of aluminum and chromium at its Montérégie site.

Authorities imposed a $10,000 administrative monetary penalty in June, claiming the wastewater exceeded legal limits for these metals.

The ministry says the Swedish battery manufacturer’s North American subsidiary discharged the runoff at its site in December.

The future of the proposed electric vehicle battery plant at the Saint-Basile-le-Grand site is uncertain after its parent company filed for bankruptcy in Sweden.

This is the third time the ministry has fined the company.

The government had previously fined Northvolt for allegedly clearing a marsh without permission and for allegedly failing to install barriers necessary to protect a nearby wetland.
