Police intensify road safety operations across Quebec starting Thanksgiving weekend

By News Staff

Quebec police officers are expected to carry out a province-wide road safety operation starting this Thanksgiving long weekend.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the operation will pay particular attention to distractions, reckless behaviour, and heavy vehicles committing violations from Oct. 10 to 16.

“This coordinated national operation is organized as part of a partnership between the Association of Quebec Police Directors, the Sûreté du Québec, the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service, Contrôle routier Québec, and the SAAQ,” the SQ said in a press release.

According to police data, reckless or inappropriate behavior is most often the cause of collisions that occur:

  • In urban areas or schools (57 per cent)
  • At intersections (65 per cent).

The SQ explained that the reckless or inappropriate behaviours that will be particularly monitored under this operation includes obeying signage, actions likely to compromise safety and illegal passing, following too closely, and cell phone use while driving.

Several enforcement operations are scheduled for Friday, marking the start of the campaign.
