Pawlloween Pawrade brings howl-oween spirit to Outremont

"This year we're expecting over 500 dogs," says Terry D'Agostino, founder of Pawsome Pet Concierge, who co-hosted the second edition of this year's Pawlloween Pawrade that's becoming a must-attend event. Corinne Boyer reports.

Outremont’s streets were filled with wagging tails and Halloween spirit Saturday as the annual Pawlloween Pawrade kicked off at Place Alice Girard.

The dogs and their owners set off towards Mali Outremont park.

“This year we’re expecting over 500 dogs and thousands of people to join with or without their dogs,” said Terry d’Agostino, founder of Pawsome Concierge. “People, even cat lovers, come and enjoy the fun.”

“I was waiting for something Halloween, and then we came across it on Instagram, so I was like ya we have to go, we got his costume ready,” said one attendee.

Pet parents used their imagination and creativity to dress their fur babies in fun, original or even scary costumes.

“Last year was the first year we hosted it here, we had over 300 dogs that showed up and dressed up, and over 1,000 people,” said D’Agostino.

The event also included a best dog costume contest, where pet parents had the chance to win several prizes.

On top of the festivities, this year’s pawrade serves a dual purpose – to bring attention to Parc Mali, a hub for pet parents, which is currently being threatened by urban development.

“Montreal is one of the leaders in pet ownership,” said D’Agostino. “So just in Quebec, there are about 3.25 million pets and the infrastructures are being threatened. So a park like this is being threatened by urban development, but we need more places, pet inclusive, pet forward, because there are more and more pet owners, but not enough places for pet owners to go out and enjoy.”

To ease the heartbreak of Coco’s recent passing – who served as last year’s mascot – D’Agostino says she’s keeping her memory and legacy alive throughout the day.

“Her passing has brought us to advocate more for change, more in infrastructure,” said D’Agostino. “So we dedicate the new pawsome 2.0 to her. So there’s a lot coming in the next few months.”

For those who couldn’t make the Pawlloween Pawrade and want to join the festivities with their furry friend – Pawsome Pet Concierge is hosting another Halloween walk on Sunday at Quartier Dix 30.
