Action Montréal campaign signs, vehicles vandalized with threats, slurs

A Montreal municipal party says it’s filed a police report after several of its campaign signs and vehicles were reportedly vandalized with spray paint and hateful messages on Monday night.
Action Montréal, led by Gilbert Thibodeau, saw several of its posters, vehicles and a building owned by one of the party’s candidates branded with swear words, homophobic slurs, death threats, the words “fascist” and the anarchist symbol.
The party says it provided video footage to police of the building on Ontario and Bercy streets, belonging to Sainte-Marie city council candidate Clint Jody, allegedly being vandalized by someone wearing all black.
One of the campaign posters for Action Montréal’s Mehdi Semsari, a candidate for borough mayor in Le Sud-Ouest, was pierced right at the centre of Semsari’s forehead, appearing to suggest a bullet hole.
Semsari tells CityNews the party is condemning what he calls “non-democratic acts.”
“It has no place in a democracy and in a campaign, an electoral campaign, especially when you can see what was written,” he said. “We got called as Nazis, fascists. I invite all people to maybe go read about our campaign and our ideas. We are at the opposite of it. We want a clean city. We want to have healthy finances. We’re very far from that.”
Projet Montréal Leader Luc Rabouin denounced the acts of vandalism in a statement Tuesday evening, calling them “unacceptable.”
“They attack not only a political party, but also democracy and the values of inclusion of our city,” Rabouin said. “Hate and intimidation have no place in an election campaign.
“Our disagreements must be expressed through words, never through violence or threats. Montreal deserves a dignified and respectful campaign.”
Semsari says he saw someone in Montreal’s Centre-Sud on Tuesday who was allegedly about to vandalize a campaign poster, and he alerted the SPVM.
