Montreal blue-collar workers have announced a one-day strike on Feb. 4.
The strike is scheduled to begin at 6 a.m., Feb. 4 and end at 5:59 a.m. on Feb. 5, the Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal announced on Friday.
The union has nearly 10,000 members, including approximately 4,600 who work for the City of Montreal. It is a local branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), affiliated with the FTQ.
The union says this will be its first strike day since 2009.
Wages are the main point of contention, with the City facing a major financial challenge and blue-collar workers refusing to see their incomes decline.
The Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés is subject to the essential services provisions of the Labor Code. The union has prepared its list of services to be provided and must discuss it with the employer. Whether or not an agreement is reached between the parties on essential services, the Administrative Labor Tribunal will have to review the case to determine whether they will be sufficient.
The collective agreement expired on Dec. 31, 2024.
The union requested mediation in mid-October in order to move the discussions forward. The parties are still in mediation, so talks have not broken down.
