The upcoming day-long blue-collar workers’ strike on Wednesday won’t impact the City’s essential services and activities, the City said.
In a press release Friday, the City said that workers assigned to services like snow removal operations, street cleaning and road repairs — considered essential — will continue to operate normally.
Other activities which will continue include: preventive inspections of municipal arenas, cleaning of public spaces, repairs to traffic signs and lights, operations related to water mains and sewers, drinking water production, wastewater treatment and maintenance of living collections that the City owns such as plants and animals.
The City’s blue-collar workers will be on strike for a day on Wednesday, starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 5:59 a.m. on Thursday It would be the first time they would be doing so since 2009.
“The City of Montreal is sparing no effort to reach a negotiated agreement as quickly as possible with the Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal (CUPE 301) to renew the collective agreement for some 5,500 blue-collar employees,” the City said.
The workers belonging to CUPE 301 voted in favour of pressure tactics in their attempt to renew their collective agreement with the City after it expired on Dec. 31, 2024.
Last Wednesday, they entered the City Hall and disrupted the budget adoption proceedings briefly after holding a rally outside.
Some services may be affected due to the strike. Montrealers are asked to check the City’s website or call 311 before heading to the City offices or facilities.
