Montreal police arrest 2 men in the case of targeted attacks on Hasidic Jews

Montreal police (SPVM) have arrested two suspects in connection with attacks allegedly targeting members of the Hasidic Jewish community earlier this month in Outremont and Mile-End neighbourhoods.
According to the Jewish Hasidic Council of Quebec (CJHQ), several men who were returning home from a synagogue after Shabbat services, on July 3, were allegedly harassed by individuals driving around the neighbourhood.
“They reportedly approached these individuals, hurled insults at them, and stole the shtreimel (fur hat) from some of them,” SPVM said in a press release Wednesday. “The suspects then fled in their vehicle.”
Following the incident, CJHQ released a security camera video which appeared to show a car pulling up next to a curb. A man then gets out of the car and attempts to grab the fur hat off a man walking on the side walk from behind and taunts him before running back to the car which drives off.
The incidents also drew strong reactions from community organizations and political leaders.
Two men, both aged 20, were arrested this week after the SPVM’s hate crimes unit opened an investigation.
The suspects were released on conditional bail and are set to return to court in early 2027.
