New refrigerated ice rink coming to Place du Village in Montreal

By News Staff

The City of Montreal and the Ville-Marie borough say a new refrigerated skating rink is coming to the Place du Village in January 2025.

It will be located at the corner of Atateken and Sainte-Catherine Street east.

The rink will measure 100 metres long and will offer everyone a unique outdoor skating experience.

“This new urban development is part of the desire to make Montreal’s northern city even more attractive,” reads a press release. “Wanting to create a popular place to fully experience winter, the borough of Ville-Marie, and more specifically the Village, have made it their mission to animate its public spaces, to develop them boldly and to offer the public a wide range of activities that can satisfy everyone’s tastes.”

The new rink will cause a temporary closure between Wolfe and Atateken Street, and it will be equipped with a multifunctional stage for various shows. It will also feature an elevated walkway for the public.

“The development and animation of public spaces are concrete ways to stimulate the dynamism of neighbourhoods, while contributing to the quality of life and the feeling of security,” said Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante. “Thanks to this brand-new refrigerated skating rink, we are offering the population of the neighbourhood and all visitors a quality destination in the heart of the Village, which we are determined to support.”

Currently, there are several skating rinks and winter activities that are open throughout the season:

-There are nine outdoor rinks available in Ville-Marie from Jan. 17 to March 5

-Multiple slopes are open for snowboarding, skating, snowmobiling, and sledding at Place Émilie-Gamelin from Jan. 16 to March 9

-Mount Royal and Walter Steward parks are also open to the public to practice different snow sports

“The skating rink is part of the organization’s desire to make the city a winter destination of choice, where every corner of the city becomes an invitation to celebrate the cold season, enriching the local experience and strengthening Montreal’s place as a must-see international destination,” said Tourisme Montréal CEO and President Yves Lalumière.”
