2 women from Montreal’s deaf community killed by train while vacationing in Portugal

Two women from Montreal’s deaf community were tragically killed by a train in Portugal while taking photos near railway tracks.

Guylaine Boulanger, 62, and Elise Bénard, 66, were struck on Saturday near Mesao Frio, east of Porto.

Reports say that despite the train conductor’s attempt to warn and brake, the impact was reportedly unavoidable.

According to the The Portugal Resident, the two women were traveling with two other friends, who were unharmed.

Global Affairs Canada tells CityNews that they are aware of the deaths and extend their condolences to the families and loved ones – as well as to all of those affected.

“Consular officials are in contact with local authorities and are in contact with the families involved to provide consular assistance. Due to privacy considerations, no further information can be disclosed,” they said by email.

This incident follows another tragedy involving Quebecers in Portugal earlier this month, when a funicular derailment in Lisbon claimed 16 lives, including a couple from Quebec.
