SQ dismantle cannabis trafficking ring linked to Asian organized crime

On Wednesday, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) dismantled a cannabis trafficking ring linked to Asian organized crime.

By late afternoon, police reported seizing 50 sticks of dynamite, 100 one-ounce gold bars, just over a metric ton of packaged cannabis ready for shipment, 1,110 cannabis plants, and $320,000 in cash.

More than 130 SQ police officers, assisted by colleagues from Montreal and the Ontario Provincial Police, are conducting more than a dozen searches in the greater Montreal area, in Vaudreuil-Dorion and in Markham, a suburb of Toronto, Ont.

SQ spokesperson Laurie Avoine explains that “the ongoing investigation suggests that registration certificates for personal production of cannabis for medical purposes are being used fraudulently to give the criminal activities of this network a legitimate appearance.”

Exports of Canadian cannabis, particularly to Europe, have risen sharply, given the lower price of the drug in Canada since its legalization.
