Jays fans in Montreal hope for a Halloween treat — a World Series title

“I’m expecting a big win for the Jays,” said Jeff Dietrich, a Blue Jays fan watching Game 6 of the World Series at La Cage in Montreal. A win Friday would clinch Toronto’s first World Series title in more than 30 years. Adriana Gentile reports.

It’s a full count of excitement on Halloween night in downtown Montreal, where fans are hoping their team delivers the sweetest treat of all — a World Series championship.

With Game 6 underway in Toronto, the Toronto Blue Jays are just one win away from rounding the bases to glory against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Jays lead the best-of-seven series 3-2, chasing their first World Series title in more than 30 years.

Across Montreal, fans are showing their support, filling bars like La Cage — Brasserie Sportive downtown, where cheers and team colours blend into one lively night of baseball and Halloween spirit.

Fans confident as stakes rise

For Jeff Dietrich, a Jays fan visiting from Stratford, confidence is high.

“I’m expecting a big win for the Jays. I go to win 4-1,” he said.

Dietrich said he believes the team will rise to the occasion. “They’ve been doing it all year. They’re a good team. They play as a great unit. And yeah, I’m confident that we’re going to pull through and win the World Series.”

He added that winning the championship would mean a lot to Canadians. “I think it’s huge for the country. This is Canada’s team, and we love the Jays. The Jays are our team. We love them. Go Jays, go.”

‘Go Jays, go’ from coast to coast

Fans from across the country are rooting for the Blue Jays.

“Yay, let’s go Jays — we’re hoping for a big win,” said Jonathan Fennell, a fan visiting from Ottawa. “A win, of course. That’s what we all want.”

Fennell said even if the series goes to a decisive Game 7, he’s still confident. “I would love for them to win tonight, obviously, but if they have to go to Game 7, they got to go to Game 7 and take it then.”

Another Ottawa fan, Alex Cole, is feeling confident about the outcome of the Friday’s game. “I feel great tonight. I think the Jays have a great chance — best home record of the American League. And I think even if they don’t get it done tonight, they get it done tomorrow.”

Cole said the team unites the country. “The entire country rallies around the Blue Jays. And I think it’s so awesome to see all over the country, all the bars, all the families just cheering on the same team. And I think it’s so special.”

He added that his pick for standout player is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. “It’s got to be Vladdy,” Cole said. “He loves his team, loves his country, his batting percentage, his home runs. He cares so much about the country, and I think he’s the best player the Jays ever had. Go Jays, go!”

Jays of the North

For many Toronto fans, Friday night feels historic.

“Oh, it’s going to be huge,” said Luke Schuler from Toronto. “You know, Jays haven’t won a World Series for a while. It would be great. I’m a huge fan. I’m expecting big things tonight.”

Schuler said catcher Alejandro Kirk could be key to a win. “For sure Alejandro Kirk. You know, he’s been the captain of this team. I think he’s going to be the key factor in tonight’s game.”

Fellow fan Grace Cooper agreed, saying a win would be “substantial to Canada.”

“The Jays are the team of the North at the end of the day,” she said. “I believe that Kirk has been such a great player, and Barger has gotten some great hits as well. So expecting big things too.”

‘It really means everything’

Toronto fan Ben Sternberg said the team’s playoff run has been emotional.

“I mean, I don’t know how to feel. I can’t really process it, you know? These last few days have just been like — it’s been something else. We’ve been the underdogs every series. I keep expecting them to lose. And just, they don’t.”

He said a championship would carry special meaning for Canadians. “I mean, this country has been through so much recently, especially with the U.S. beating them at their own sport. Like, it really means everything.”

As for who might make the difference Friday night, Sternberg said: “It’s going to be Ernie Clement tonight. He’s been consistent all postseason. He was a little off the last few days, but he’s coming through tonight.”

A win Friday would give the Blue Jays their first World Series title in more than 30 years, but if the Dodgers extend the series, the drama will reach its peak — with everything on the line in a winner-take-all Game 7 on Saturday.
