Quebec announces $3M to support the restaurant industry

Quebec wants to help the province’s culinary scene maintain its prominent place in the economy and within the province’s tourism offerings.
Economy Minister Bernard Drainville announced Friday that $3 million will be allocated over three years to La Table Ronde, an organization with 140 members representing 210 establishments in 45 cities across 12 regions of the province.
The funding will support about 10 projects, each involving about 10 restaurant owners.
The objectives of these projects include attracting the next generation of chefs, developing new business models, strengthening local supply chains, and promoting sustainable gastronomy. With this in mind, efforts will also focus on further highlighting Quebec’s local terroir and consolidating the province’s reputation as a premier culinary destination.
In its press release, the ministry notes that the plate is the culmination of the work of farmers, fishermen, and artisans—activities that sustain family-owned businesses and, in some cases, entire regions.
Quoted in the press release, Drainville states that the investment “will benefit our businesses, our producers, our regions, and an entire industry that is a source of pride for Quebec. In addition to putting more Quebec products on our plates, these projects will generate significant economic and cultural benefits throughout our regions.”
Patrick St-Vincent, executive director of La Table Ronde, believes that Quebec’s culinary scene is of strategic importance to the province’s economy. The projects that will be implemented “will make Quebec’s culinary scene a true driver of economic, cultural, and regional development,” he says.
