‘We believed’: Montreal Alouettes superfan celebrates Grey Cup win

“Be proud of our Alouettes,” said Heather Lowengren, superfan who delivers her baked goods to the team weekly, something she's done for more than 10 years - today she celebrated their big win at the Grey Cup Parade. Pamela Pagano reports.

What do brownies and cookies and a Grey Cup Parade have in common?

It’s Montreal Alouettes super fan – Heather Lowengren.

She’s been delivering her delicious desserts to the team every week at their practices for more than 10 years – and today she celebrated the big win at the parade.

“We love our Alouettes,” she yelled. “The excitement was overwhelming.”

“I felt in my heart that they deserved it,” she added. “We believed.”

Their win on Sunday – something she predicted – never losing confidence in her favourite team.

So did she think her treats helped?

“Definitely, definitely,” she said. “I love to spoil my boys.”

Lowengren has been a fan of the Alouettes since the late sixties.

Her tradition of baking sweet treats for the team started when she delivered cupcakes to former Alouette placekicker Sean Whyte on his birthday – because he was away from home.

The team went on a winning streak after that, so she continued baking for the players and hasn’t stopped since.

“The last 11 seconds, I swear my husband was the 13th player on the team,” said Lowengren. “It was just so emotional.”

Lowengren recently lost her husband Jerry after 51 years of marriage – he was once a waterboy for the Alouettes – she received lots of support and love from the players since his passing.

“She was the one who passed this down to me,” said Jade Heppell, Lowengren’s granddaughter, about their love for football. “I’m so proud to share it with her.”

From her family to the community – her love for the team and those delicious treats always put a smile on everyone’s faces.

“Get your season tickets, go to the games,” added Lowengren. “Be proud of our Alouettes.”
