Sunwing ‘party flight’ passengers could face penalties; notices of infractions sent

Health Canada has sent notices of infractions to Quebec’s top prosecutor over the infamous Sunwing flight from Montreal to Cancun, Mexico on Dec. 30.

About 150 Quebec influencers – some part of a reality TV show – were on the flight. Social media videos showed them allegedly partying with no masks, no social distancing, standing in the aisles and on seats, holding bottles of alcohol, and vaping.

The health agency says 12 notices of non-compliance were identified under the Quarantine Act so far from travellers of the flight. They have been issued electronically and are being sent by mail as well.

Three reports were sent to Quebec’s crown prosecutor for review. It will be up to the prosecutor to decide the next steps.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is also following up on suspected fraudulent cases and non respect of quarantine.

More infractions could be sent.

After Sunwing refused to bring the group back, and several others carriers followed suit, it’s unclear how they will return to Canada – although some already made it back into the country last week.
